“Do you think there’s anything wrong with your mind, really?” Buried deep in the low end of the titular track of Derek Russo’s latest EP, Jack Nicholson’s question is a bit of a rhetorical device. To be in this music, dancing until the odd hours of the night, you have to be a bit batty. Club Cuckoo is an attempt for the artist to not give himself completely over to voices in his head and find meaning in the madness. While still defining his signature sound, Russo’s releases have a distinctive polishedness, with an underlying rhythm sharpened by a true devotion to the master’s of dance music. The label head of Broad Channel, he founded the project to serve as a container for exploration.

Sampling “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,” ‘Club Cuckoo’ and ‘Free 2 Bounce’ start the project off, a complimentary pair of buoyant dancefloor jams. Saturn Escape begins somewhat unassumingly, reserved and introspective, before descending into an infectious groove. ‘Party Freq’ closes out the EP exactly how you would close out the night, an ode to the weirdos who stick it out to sunrise, made even freakier by a smoked out Brenda Harris vocal.
